Canucks Chalk Talk: Sept. 10 & 11, 2021

The St. James Jr Canucks started off the 2021 preseason campaign with a 4-1 loss to the Ft. Garry/Ft. Rouge Twins on Saturday night. With a lot of rookies getting their first look at the lineup, the Canucks fought hard and kept the game close throughout. Promising rookie Dylan Morden scored the lone goal for the Canucks.

The team was at it again less than 16 hours later in a Sunday matinee against the River East Royal Knights. The team looked much sharper in this affair and went on to pick up a 5-4 overtime victory. Newly acquired Aidan Bruce and veteran forward Zach Greenwood each scored a power play goal. Speedster Griffin Haight added a pair of goals and in overtime it was none other than Brady Whitely, who scored yet another overtime winner to lead the Canucks to victory.

Three Stars from the weekend:

3. Dylan Morden – Morden has come to camp stronger and was noticeable in both games. He brings a solid skill set to a team that is looking to create more offence this season.

2. Brady Whitely – With a goal and an assist in 2 games, Whitely came alive in the game against the Knights. He has a knack for scoring overtime goals and did it again after a fake drop pass fooled two defenders and he walked in to score the game winner.

1. Griffin Haight – Speed kills in the MMJHL and Haight has a ton of it. Haight was buzzing from the opening faceoff Saturday night to the final buzzer Sunday afternoon. He was rewarded with two big goals for his efforts.
